Purple Pitcher Plant

Kept outside at times but primarily maintained as a houseplant indoors. Humidity box or open glass jar enclosure shared with Nepenthes sp.

Care

Requires full sun — minimum 4–6 hours of direct sun daily; indoor plants benefit from supplemental grow lighting. Use only distilled water, rainwater, or reverse-osmosis water; tap water minerals accumulate in the medium and kill the plant over time. Grow in tray method: maintain a shallow tray of water under the pot so the roots remain in a consistently wet bog environment. Temperate Sarracenia require winter dormancy — move outdoors or into an unheated space for several months each year; they are cold-hardy to zone 2. Do not fertilize the medium. The pitchers naturally fill with rainwater and digestive fluid; this is part of normal function. S. purpurea relies on rain to wash prey into the pitchers rather than producing enzymes to attract insects directly.
