Watermelon Pellionia

Pellionia pulchra is a low trailing groundcover native to Vietnam, grown for its strongly patterned foliage: silver-gray leaf surfaces crosshatched with a network of dark olive-green veins. The effect reads almost metallic in good light. Stems are brittle and root readily at nodes, making it well suited to terrariums and humid enclosures.

Growth is spreading rather than upright. In stable high humidity with consistent moisture and bright indirect light, it moves quickly. Leaf patterning is most distinct under even, diffuse light — direct sun bleaches the silver markings. Handle carefully when working with it; stems snap at the node joints with very little force.

Care

Keep the medium consistently moist — even brief drought causes leaf curl and drop. Requires high ambient humidity; best suited to terrariums, humidity trays, or enclosed enclosures. Provide bright to medium indirect light; direct sun bleaches the silver patterning on the leaves. Growth is rapid in stable, high-humidity conditions. Handle stems carefully — they snap at node joints with very little force. Not suitable for typical dry household conditions without supplemental humidity.

Propagation Notes

Roots readily from stem cuttings placed in moist substrate or water. Even a single node with a healthy leaf can establish given adequate humidity. Cuttings used in a closed terrarium in December 2025 rooted without issue.

History

Acquired as a cutting from The Modern Plantsman in December 2025. Most of the original cutting was used in a terrarium assembled as a gift. One remaining cutting has been growing on from a few leaves since then.
