Selaginella uncinata
Variegated Peacock Moss
Selaginellaceae
A spike moss native to southern China, grown for its iridescent, electric blue-green coloration — an effect caused by thin-film interference in the leaf cells rather than pigment. Related to ferns and mosses but forming its own ancient lineage.
Care
Requires consistently moist substrate — even brief drying causes die-back and browning. Very high ambient humidity (70%+) is essential; not suitable for typical dry indoor conditions without supplemental humidity. Best grown in terrariums or enclosed/semi-closed enclosures. Tolerates low to medium indirect light; the iridescent sheen is most vivid in lower, diffuse light conditions. Spreads readily via surface runners. Do not allow the medium to dry out or the plant to sit in stagnant water — good moisture with airflow is the target.
