Mediterranean White Scotch Heather

White-flowering heather in the cold-hardy garden. Acquisition origin unknown. Sited in full sun with lean, acidic soil. Flowers in late summer; foliage holds through winter. Shares soil requirements with other Ericaceae in the collection — low pH, excellent drainage, no lime.

Care

Requires lean, acidic soil (pH 4.5–5.5) and excellent drainage — will decline quickly in rich, fertile, or wet soil. Plant in full sun for the best flower production; shade reduces flowering significantly. Shear lightly immediately after flowering to prevent woodiness, but do not cut into old wood below green growth. Do not fertilize with lime-based products. Mulch with pine bark or pine needles to maintain soil acidity. Long-lived when sited correctly.
