Magnolia × 'Galaxy'
Galaxy Magnolia
Magnoliaceae
Blooming as of late March 2026. Overnight temperatures dipping to freezing; blooms are showing no sign of frost damage.
Care
Mulch heavily around the root zone to retain moisture and moderate soil temperature — shallow-rooted and sensitive to drought during establishment. Water deeply and consistently for the first two to three growing seasons. Prune only after flowering if needed; pruning in fall or winter removes next year’s flower buds. ‘Galaxy’ is a later-blooming hybrid developed at the USDA National Arboretum, selected in part because its delayed bloom time reduces frost damage compared to earlier cultivars. Flowers before leaves emerge; protect open blooms from hard frost if possible.
