Dryopteris tokyoensis
Hondo Wood Fern
Dryopteridaceae
An evergreen fern native to Japan, grown for its arching dark green fronds and striking orange-flushed new growth in spring. Maintains foliage through winter in zone 6b with adequate shelter, making it a useful evergreen presence in shaded beds.
Acquired February 6, 2026 from Planting Partners (Etsy).
Care
Prefers consistently moist, humus-rich soil in partial to full shade. Afternoon shade is important in warmer climates — direct summer sun will scorch the fronds. Mulch around the crown to retain moisture and protect over winter. Remove tattered old fronds in late winter just before new growth emerges to show off the orange croziers. Divide in spring if clumps become crowded.
