Sichuan Peppercorn

Sichuan peppercorn grown from seed sourced via Etsy. Seeds stratified and germinated via paper towel method before being moved to nursery pots.

Care

Plant in full sun; tolerates partial shade but produces fewer peppercorns. Adaptable to most well-drained soils once established. Handle with care — sharp thorns are present on branches and stems; gloves recommended when pruning. For spice production, plants need to reach maturity and be female; seed-grown plants of unknown sex will not fruit until mature, and male plants will not produce harvestable peppercorns. The outer husk (pericarp) of the seed is the culinary product — harvested in late summer when the outer casing begins to split open. Both the leaves and bark are also aromatic.

Propagation Notes

Seeds germinated via paper towel and plastic bag method. 5 seeds sprouted as of March 25, 2026 — radicles visible and cotyledons emerging. Sprouted seeds transferred individually to 3.5” nursery pots and covered to maintain humidity while roots establish.

History

Acquired February 24, 2026 from MyGardenNYC on Etsy. Seeds started in paper towel germination setup shortly after arrival.
